Cattle Feedlot EQIP Hoop Building

The Challenge

Cattle feedlot operators have become more conscientious of environmental concerns of nutrient runoff leaving open feedlots from rainwater or snowmelt. Housing the cattle under a roofed structure prevents stormwater runoff contamination. Some producers are working in conjunction with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) to build covered feedlot structures to prevent runoff and protect water quality.

The KPL Solution

This producer chose to construct at 42 ft x 400 ft covered hoop building with a capacity of 370 head of cattle. The hoop structure used a steel roof framework and wood composite support posts and footings. A concrete curb was designed as backing to aid in manure scrapping with metal containment fencing along three walls. As a Technical Service Provider (TSP), Kuehl and Payer, Ltd. working with a structural engineer, prepared the necessary Engineer’s Report with construction plans and specifications for the building, in accordance with NRCS Standards.

Construction observation was done by KPL throughout the construction process to verify compliance with plans and specifications. At the completion of construction, KPL provided the required certification to the NRCS.

Results and Benefits

The producer was able to construct a feedlot hoop building with cost share through the NRCS. The enclosed feedlot protects the livestock from the weather elements resulting in production gains while preventing impacts to surface water quality.
