Water Main to Serve South Shore Storm Lake, Iowa

The Challenge

The area south of the Lake is unincorporated and was served by individual wells for potable drinking water. Wells were located near septic tanks and contamination was common. Other problems such as iron and low yield caused the residents to seek a better water source. Sources included the City of Storm Lake or Clay Regional Water.

The KPL Solution

Design an 8” water main to connect to the existing Storm Lake water system in Emerald Park and run it all the way around the lake to Bel-Air Subdivision.

Work with individual property owners to obtain easements and get commitments for connecting to the new water main.

Develop equitable assessment procedures to spread the cost to those property owners that committed to the cost of the system. Set up other rates for those who might connect later.

Results and Benefits

Potable drinking water was supplied to the area resulting in more security for homeowners that the water they were receiving met state requirements.

Encouraged further development of the lake front lots that remained and improved property values for those residents using the new source of water.

The City of Storm Lake benefits from the increased water sales and home owners benefit from use of a good quality safe drinking water.
