The Iowa Water Conference presented Kuehl and Payer, Ltd. with an award for the storm water design and construction of the Alta, Iowa storm water drainage and control improvements.
The project utilized detention basins to reduce the peak volume of urban runoff. The improvements also protect water quality through an infiltration process that captures the pollutants within the urban storm water runoff (hydrocarbons, particulate matter, heavy metals, nutrients, etc.)
Each basin contains a subsurface infiltration trench tile in the base of the trench. The infiltrating water is filtered through various levels of aggregate to control sediment and other debris in the storm water.
