Northbound Interstate 29 Staking Woodbury County, Iowa

The Challenge

To gather survey data under traffic for 14 miles of northbound Interstate 29 in Woodbury County. Develop horizontal alignment, stationing and vertical profiles and provide construction staking for an unbounded PCC overlay all in one construction season.

The KPL Solution

Utilizing GPS and Robotic Total Stations, field technicians gathered horizontal vertical data to accurately represent the existing roadway alignment and elevation. Staff engineers then utilized this data to develop new horizontal alignment, stationing, and profile grades for the proposed concrete overlay meeting the tolerance set by the IDOT for minimum and maximum thickness. All this was accomplished in a short time frame in staged areas to minimize disruption of interstate traffic. Using the Kuehl and Payer ltd designed alignment and profile; Kuehl and Payer Ltd field technicians were then able to provide the construction staking services needed to control the paving machinery.

Results and Benefits

Fourteen Miles of Northbound Interstate 29 now has a new smooth, durable, PCC surface. Kuehl and Payer Ltd staff provided all of the survey, design, and staking in an efficient manner allowing the project to be completed on schedule within one construction season.
